Many &#8220;landscape&#8221; shots could have been much better if I&#8217;<\/span><span class=\"s1\">d known some pretty basic rules concerning the so-called golden hours at dawn and dusk<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">However  , my main sticking points have been a basic lack of understanding of some of the most important, yet easily overlooked, accessories and their applications<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The most important accessory I have overlooked is the tripod &#8211; until recently<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I recently purchased two things which altered my perceptions about shooting<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> The first, purchased about <\/span><span class=\"s3\">6<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> months ago, was <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Digital-Photography-Book-Scott-Kelby\/dp\/032147404X\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1\/102-2147728-2575333?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1189340692&amp;sr=8-1\">The Digital Photography Book<\/a><\/em>\u00a0by Scott Kelby<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> The second, bought after reading about the importance of a tripod (in the book), and after reading some recommendations on the <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/photography-on-the.net\">Canon Digital Photography Forums<\/a>, was a <\/span><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/353322-REG\/Bogen_Manfrotto__3021BPRO_Tripod_Black_with.html\">Bogen\/Manfrotto <\/a><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/353322-REG\/Bogen_Manfrotto__3021BPRO_Tripod_Black_with.html\"><span class=\"s3\">3021<\/span><span class=\"s1\">BPRO tripod with a <\/span><span class=\"s3\">488<\/span><\/a><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/353322-REG\/Bogen_Manfrotto__3021BPRO_Tripod_Black_with.html\">RC2 Ball Head<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">These two things have virtually revolutionized the way I have been shooting<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Especially at night<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Yes, I<\/span><span class=\"s3\">&#8216;ve known that I needed a tripod, and yes, I&#8217;<\/span><span class=\"s1\">ve used a tripod before<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> But what I was missing before and has since been corrected, was the tantamount importance of having and using a tripod, even in situations in which I thought I<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>didn<\/span><span class=\"s3\">&#8216;t need one. In fact, there are now almost no situations in which I don&#8217;<\/span><span class=\"s1\">t <\/span><span class=\"s2\">use<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> a tripod<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Previous tripods had always been cheapos<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Tripods that invariably lacked either stability or simply weren<\/span><span class=\"s3\">&#8216;t up to the task of supporting my camera&#8217;<\/span><span class=\"s1\">s weight<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> What you trade in cost you lose in either weight or stability, and I was buying tripods which were both lightweight and cheap<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Light and cheap just isn<\/span><span class=\"s3\">&#8216;t a working combination for tripods. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">You can have it light, you can have it cheap, and you can have it stable, but you can only pick two of those<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Light and cheap = unstable<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Light and stable = expensive<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Stable and cheap = heavy<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As an owner of the <\/span><span class=\"s3\">3021<\/span><span class=\"s1\">, I can be assured that my pictures are the images I intended <\/span><span class=\"s2\">while<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> also knowing that I have a platform that is stable enough to trust with my camera operating in a totally hands-off manner<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Previous tripods have always left me thinking that I would soon see my camera crashing to the ground <\/span><span class=\"s2\">if<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> I pulled my hands too far from a <\/span><span class=\"s4\">&#8220;safe&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> distance<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> Now I can shoot an exposure that is several minutes long and walk away to have a conversation with a passerby<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">And believe me, on a military base in the middle of Iraq, there are plenty of curious passers-by who wonder why you are out taking pictures with such a <\/span><span class=\"s4\">&#8220;complicated&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"s1\"> setup<\/span><span class=\"s2\">.<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the last three years I have been learning the very basics of photography, as can no doubt be seen in many of the shots I have displayed here in days past.
